Goal 6.5 of the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (NSSP) calls for increasing the proportion of educational faculty and staff who have received training on identifying and responding to persons at risk for suicide. In response, we forged an alliance with the field's advocacy arm, SPAN USA, which had challenged all states to mandate that educational personnel receive training in suicide prevention. The PDV Foundation supported this position with its own compelling eBulletin and webinar under our GLS Intercom™ program, delivered to all state suicide prevention leaders nationwide. We partnered with a private foundation and the New Jersey State Department of Children and Families, whose chief medical officer is a former state assemblyman who played an integral role in passage of landmark youth suicide prevention legislation in our nation. And we developed a "how to" fact sheet of what states need to succeed at passage of state legislation mandating teacher training in youth suicide prevention.
