Delivery of Advancing Suicide Prevention® magazine to policymakers including health advisors to all members of the United States Congress and key officials at the federal, state and municipal levels brings suicide prevention to the forefront, as these audiences consider how and where to allocate resources.

For our issue on suicide in rural communities, we worked with the office of U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) to spotlight first-ever Senate hearings on teen suicide in 2005. One year later in May 2006, the Senate unanimously passed legislation authorized by Senator Dorgan to direct counseling resources, professionals and suicide-prevention programs to teenagers on tribal reservations, where youth suicide rates are among the highest in the nation - including the Great Plains, where it is ten times the national average.
